"Change Ringing" by Justin Caguiat at Serpentine
A new site-responsive exhibition exploring architecture, spirituality, sound and transformation.
At Serpentine, Caguiat works with the gallery’s architectural and infrastructural features, presenting a new series of thermochromic paintings that continuously change in response to heat and light. Change Ringing brings together painting, sculpture, printmaking, sound and film in a site-responsive installation, exploring the relationship between architecture, spirituality and the rituals embedded within everyday urban infrastructure.
Throughout the exhibition, bronze bells cast in the shapes of various flowers and plant seeds ring in continually changing sequences. The score, composed by Lily Pickett, draws on the principles of English change ringing, while the gallery’s walls gather and amplify the bells’ chimes, transforming the space into a listening instrument.
Evolving on ideas first explored in his previous project Zodiac Machine, Change Ringing develops Caguiat’s ideas around devotion, architecture and materiality, considering how buildings accumulate memory, ritual and acts of transformation.
The Bukhman Foundation is proud to be a lead supporter of this new presentation of Caguiat’s multidisciplinary practice.
The exhibition is on view at Serpentine South from 8 October 2026 to 10 January 2027.
